Often you will find companies blaming their website look or feel as the issue when in reality, it’s often due to poorly planned call-to-actions. CTAs as they are commonly referred to are arguably the most important part of your website and marketing efforts, yet, a good portion of business owners wouldn’t be able to tell you the first thing about a CTA or why you should use one. Whether it be in the building of your site or the marketing of your offering, an effective CTA is going to grab your customer’s attention, increase interaction and convert your leads.

So what makes a call-to-action so important?

By definition, in marketing, a call-to-action is an instruction to the audience to provoke an immediate response, usually using an imperative verb such as “call now,” “find out more,” or “visit a store today.” Provoking a response is the key action here and certainly a necessity if you have an intended path in mind for your customer. Whether it’s part of your website efforts or a marketing plan, you should have goals in mind around what you want to achieve and that’s where these CTAs become so important. Understanding the primary goal for the campaign and an ideal path for that conversion is going to crucial if you hope to guide your customers in the right direction.

Dropbox is a perfect example of a company who have a clear goal in mind and know how to use call-to-actions well to get what they want. Dropbox offer a file storage service making their money off of their high end users who require more than the basics. Dropbox’s target market and others alike are more likely to try their product for free and upgrade, rather than pay up front and hope the service matches their requirements. Having multiple buttons encouraging people to try Dropbox for free is great way of getting customers on to their product quickly rather than reading a bunch of information on why the service may suit them.

Here we see another example of a call-to-action with a different theme in mind. Manpacks, an American based company who specialise in men’s items have a email sign up button. Understanding the importance of email marketing, Manpack have centered their focus around signups for their mailer as they see the potential for repeat business through email campaigns.

The text suggesting a guy joins up as “thousands” already have is the final piece of the puzzle in what would be considered to be a very effective CTA. Statements like this are a great as they play on people and their emotions. Manpacks are enticing people to sign up purely so they aren’t ‘missing out’.

As a business owner, you have endless options for the creation of compelling CTAs. Understanding your marketing objectives and that path you would like your customers to take is the first and most important step in the implementation of a successful CTA. “Having strong but relevant call-to-actions on your website will help you grab the attention of your website visitors. In turn, you can expect an increase in user interaction while achieving business goals like: email subscriptions, sales, sign-ups, and so much more. While we have only covered a few examples, there are a huge variety of CTAs of which Hubspot do a good job of explaining if you would like to read more.
